Poor second innings start for UPA II

The performance of UPA’s first year under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi in office in its second term has been lackadaisical. When the need of the hour was to take a firm and bold decisions on issues such as terrorism and Naxalism, this government failed to deliver. The government’s only priority is to survive and fulfil the untenable demands of its coalition partners. Ironically, despite having a highly respected and erudite leader, Manmohan Singh, as the prime minister, India is gradually losing its stature among the comity of nations. It is high time the prime minister took hard decisions to reignite confidence in this government.

Black money, which is currently estimated at 40 per cent of GDP, has thrived irrespective of the parties in power. The government should devise new ways like ‘profitable patriotism’, as the writer has suggested to bring back our wealth for financing development. Legal agreements should be worked out with offshore tax havens to retrieve Indian money parked in foreign banks. Even if just a few measures of this kind are implemented, the results may turn out to be very encouraging.
