I’m sure many of you are going to agree with me on this. Read on! Every attribute assigned to the present middle class of India and their social attitude is apt.Yet,one is left searching for reasons which have led to these behavioural changes over just the past 25 to 30 years. Before this period,it was the virtuous middle class which took part in the freedom struggle of India, sustained the administration admirably after the British vacated, drafted elaborate five-year plans for the development of independent India, defended its territory from external aggression, absorbed advanced technical knowledge and expertise and followed the law and rules to the letter. Unfortunately,it changed for the worse later.
It is worth analysing what has led to the middle class to acquire such a sense of entitlement and impunity. Firstly, the blame can be laid at the door of the education system, which encourages unbridled competition, without emphasising on values. With sustained efforts over a period, this can be remedied. However,a more difficult cause to rectify is the money which has been suddenly put in their hands after economic liberalisation through hefty pay packets and bonuses. Take the extra money and they will be left with no device with which to violate any rules.
