The internet giant, Google Inc has struck a major deal with the British Library to make thousands of historic books available online. This new and wonderful initiative by the Internet giant will allow Internet users across the world to get access, read, search and copy 250,000 texts published between the year 1700 and 1870.. However the deal is applicable to only those works in the library’s collection that are no longer covered by copyright restrictions.
This is not the first deal for Google as it has similar deals with major libraries around the world. However this initiative to put millions of copyrighted titles online has been faced with strict opposition by the publishing industry and has become a major subject of a legal battle in the United States. The British library has a collection of approx of 14 million books and almost 1 million periodicals. Also the library would want to digitize up to 40 million pages of newspapers dating back three and a half centuries.
