One of the best things about the current crop of smartphones is their ability to run special programs, enabling them to act like mini computers. We’ve all seen the “There’s an app for that!” commercials for the iPhone, and there’s actually some truth to that kind of advertising. The Apple store alone boasts a couple hundred thousand apps for iPhone, and there are other sites that offer additional choices. But mobile phone applications are not limited to the iPhone. These days, practically any handset can accommodate these programs, thereby making them a whole lot more functional and fun.

Just what kind of mobile phone applications can you expect to find out there? Well, with hundreds of thousands to choose from, the range of options is rather staggering. They range from useful productivity apps, which can allow you to sync your calendar and contacts or view and edit MS Office documents, to mobile phone applications that allow you to play games, listen to the radio, watch videos, read books, or write a blog post right from your handset. Deciding which apps to download simply depends on what you want to do.

Free mobile phone applications are the most popular for obvious reasons, and some free apps are very useful. But you often get what you pay for when it comes to these programs, so if you rely on your cellular device be able to perform certain functions for work, it might be in your best interest to go ahead and pay for the full version of whatever application you want. Also, it helps to read customer reviews of mobile phone applications before downloading so you have an idea of whether the program will even be capable of doing what you need it to.

Toshiba LCD Panels in Apple iPhone

We all know that Apple INC majorly outsources its manufacturing process to top companies across the world and design & innovation as its major functionality. Every small unit in a Apple device is outsourced to top companies like Samsung, Toshiba, ARM etc. Talking about the new LCD panels that Toshiba Corp has plans to spend 100 billion yen ($1.19 billion) approx to build a factory that manufactures small LCD panels, mainly to supply to Apple Inc for use in iPhones.

Its subsidiary Toshiba Mobile Display Co is also building a facility that will churn out low-temperature polysilicon LCD panels, which enables high-resolution images, which the parent company denies vehemently. The company claims that the it has decided nothing regarding building a new unit that manufactures LCD panels for Apple.

However the work on the plant will start by early next year, with production due to begin in the second half of 2011, the paper said.

Toshiba Mobile Display are already into the low-temperature polysilicon LCD panels manufacturing at a facility in the prefecture with an astounding monthly production capacity of 8.55 million units. On the advent of the new factory this capacity is projected to more than double.

Apple will invest in the factory, the Nikkei said. Toshiba’s shares gained 0.5 percent to 442 yen in early trade in Tokyo, outperforming the benchmark Nikkei average, which dipped 0.1 per cent.

There’s one major change or upgrade to 700W from the Treo 650. Now you’ll notice two soft buttons right below the LCD screen of the Treo 700w. These launch the Windows mobile 5.0 application.

What’s nice about the new Treo 700w QWERTY keyboard is that the keys are squarer and better spaced apart than its predecessor. At night, if I need to e-mail someone, the illuminated keys make it easy for me to see what I’m typing on the screen.

New Treo 700 Screen with New Features

What I like about the new screen is the quick dial window at the top of the LCD screen. With this feature it’s easy to type in the name or telephone number to dial.
Also, near the bottom of the 700w screen is a web search window. Simply type in the keyword phrase in right away, the 700w will launch a Web browser and give you the results of your keyword search. The other handy feature is that you can now program VCR-like keys. These hotkeys can be programmed so you can easily delete, or skip to the next message just by pressing these hot keys. You can easily hit: play, next message, back, pause and delete.

Lower Screen Resolution and Long Battery Life

The old Treo 650 came with a higher screen resolution at 320 x 320 pixels. With the new Treo 700w the resolution is lower at 240 x 240 pixels. It is still easy to read at night and in the bright outdoors. I checked e-mails, looked at my schedule for the day and called someone with one hand. Because of the centrally located 5-way navigation pad, the Treo 700w is comfortable for both left handed and right handed people. The 700w comes with an expanded SDIO expansion card slot, which allows the addition of up to 2 GB of storage space.

I used the Treo 700w for full three days before I needed to replace the battery. This is definitely an improvement over the older 650 model. Also, the flash ROM built-in the Windows buffs up things, which drastically reduces battery consumption, a good thing. If you’ve just spent 45 minutes typing in a proposal and your battery runs out, don’t pull your hair out, the data will be stored on your flash ROM.

Verizon ED-VO Fast Internet Option

Verizon claims that their high-speed ED-VO can transfer data at 400 to 700 kilobytes per second. Comparing both the Treo 650 in the new 700w, I loaded a web page five times faster on the 700w using Verizon’s ED-VO network than on the Treo 650. Browsing on the 700w is comparable to my broadband cable Internet connection at home.

Alert Friends and Family with One Push E-Mail

Move over Blackberry. The Palm Treo 700w uses a polling process to send an SMS from your server to the Treo 700w. This tells the Treo 700w to get ready and receive a message.
What is polling? You can program your 700w to pull e-mail to your device on a regular basis. For instance, every morning at 8 a.m., you can program your e-mails to be downloaded from your server to the Treo 700w device.

True one push e-mail is when you receive an e-mail, and that e-mail immediately is sent to your Treo 700w device, that’s called push e-mail. Unfortunately, push e-mail won’t be available until the next upgrade. When will that be? None of us know unless you have a psychic friend that has an 85% accuracy level. You can ask your psychic friend to tune into the cosmos and ask when Palm will roll out the true push e-mail to market.

It’s never been easy to stay in touch inexpensively with friends and family. Now you can by e-mailing them a positive message from your Treo 700w.

What is Wireless sync from Verizon Wireless? This is an extra service that you need to subscribe to from Verizon wireless. It is not available on the market today. But down the road, you will be able to redirect your e-mail from your home computer or office server directly to your 700w smart phone in real-time.

Windows Mobile 5.0 Operating System

Last spring, Bill Gates announced the launch of Windows mobile 5.0 operating system. Now you can view: pod casts, photo blogs, download news RSS feeds, and stream live TV shows and music from your TV tuner enabled desktop PC at home to your Treo 700w. I did not find the 5.0 operating system to be buggy at all.

One Very Amazing Converged PDA/Phone

In the past, converged devices offered low-quality cell phone reception and call quality. Essentially, if you owned an older converged device, it amounted to a very expensive PDA and a bad cell phone. Many folks would have to carry around a regular cell phone just so they could make and receive cell phone calls.

The Treo 700w radio stack and Windows mobile 5.0 is completely revamped. Now there are less dropped calls. Plus, it offers higher call quality. With Verizon Wireless, my provider, I found the call clarity to be greatly improved compared to the Treo 650. I purposely made a three-way conference call to two associates of mine: one located in Sedona, Arizona and the other in Long Island, New York. During the entire conference call, I heard everyone just fine. The call did not end abruptly due to poor reception. Overall, the Treo 700w smart phone exceeded my expectations.

With the Apple iPad churning up a mountain of expectations, Samsung just couldn’t distance itself from the race to come up with the device that turns the laptop into a slim slab. The Korean major has now come up with the Galaxy Tab, a tablet that is operational on the latest Android OS, the Android 2.2 version. This new machine is powered by a 1 GHz processor. With a 7 inch capacitive display, this flashy device offers a smooth touch interface.

This device is available in two memory capacities, 16GB as well as 32GB. Both of these can also take on additional memory. Some of the sexy features that is available in this device is that the Galaxy tab can be used for downloading applications from the Android market and the Samsung apps.

Other features include the Adobe Flash 10.1 player and full High Definition video playback. Coupled with a 3MP camera (quite disappointing I should say!!) and video capture at 30 frames per second. The other value added features that are loaded in the Tablet are Thinkfree, Swype and Hybrod widget. The only bad news is that Samsung hasn’t still announced the launch date in India as well as the price. Tech experts are expecting this new baby to hit the markets by November early with a speculative price of 30000 bucks!!

The Phone market seems to be expanding quite rapidly thanks to the increasing demand from the consumers. Many new entrants like Videocon, Karbon Mobiles, Micromax want to establish their presence in the increasingly congested phone market. Videocon Mobile Phones has now announced its foray into the growing Android phone market with the launch of ‘Zeus’ in the Indian market. This new mobile comes with a fair pricing of Rs 12,900. The price sounds very competitive but we’ll have to dig a little deeper to find out how good the mobile is for that price.

The biggest advantage that this 3.2-inch multi-touch screen handset has is that it is equipped with Android operating system, clubbed along with this is your high resolution five megapixel camera with the standard Wi-Fi features. We all know how the Indian mobile phone market today is very dynamic and price sensitive. With these new launches, Videocon Phones are trying to create a desired newness in the industry

Like I said what might favor this mobile is Android, an open-source operating system for mobiles and wireless devices, initially developed by Google. Since this is an open source it enables developers to design applications independent of the handset type. Any user has the opportunity to download over 70,000 applications like games, music, music players and location-based services.

Peers like HTC, Samsung, Motorola and Spice have already launched Android-powered phones in India!!! Seems like there are many more companies looking to joining the bandwagon soon. Top computer manufacturers like Dell have also introduced tablet PCs based on the platform. Although this phone has features that can excite anybody, I still wouldn’t recommend you to buy thos considering the numerous other options we have this price.

Till a few days back, Samsung were leading manufacturers in manufacturing mobiles that have some of the most incredible standby time. Unfortunately for Samsung just when they thought they had the a phone which offers an amazing standby time of 67 days, Zen Mobile is willing to give that little extra.

Zen Mobiles have apparently launched a dual-SIM phone which boasts of a standby time of 72 days or 1,728 hours to be particular. The Zen M25 mobile sports the standard size 2.4-inch TFT screen with a good resolution. However a very disappointing feature of the Zen M25 is that it packs a 1.3 megapixel camera. Now this might pose a problem and I seriously feel they should have improve the resolution of the camera. The phone also offers support for English and Hindi language. Other key features of the mobile include 3.5 mm jack, 500 contacts phone book, Bluetooth, FM recorder, FM radio and expandable memory up to 4GB. The phone promises customers a decent talk time of 16 hours.
